Vintage Pearl Engagement Rings

A pearl engagement ring is, as you might suspect, a type of ring that uses a pearl as the main gemstone. The pearl is sometimes surrounded by smaller diamonds or gems. Pearl engagement rings have been popular for centuries, and continue to be a favourite choice.

There are many different types of pearls, but the most well known are Akoya, South Sea, and Tahitian. Akoya pearls come from Japan and have a white or cream colour. South Sea pearls come from Australia or Indonesia and are typically a golden colour. Tahitian pearls come from the French Polynesian Islands and can be black, green, blue, or silver.

Other types of pearls include Freshwater, Biwa, Conch, and Shell. Freshwater pearls come from mussels that live in lakes and rivers. They can be white, pink, lavender, or black. Biwa pearls come from freshwater molluscs in Japan and are usually round or baroque in shape. Conch pearls come from sea snails in the Caribbean Sea and Indian Ocean.

A pearl is made when an irritant, such as a piece of sand, becomes lodged in the oyster. To protect itself, the oyster coats the irritant with a secretion from its mantle. Over time, this secretion builds up and forms a pearl. Oysters can produce a wide range of colours in their pearls, depending on the type of mollusc and the water’s pH level. White pearls are created by oysters that live in clean water, while black pearls come from oysters that live in muddy water.

This is a difficult question to answer because it depends on the environment in which they are stored and the care they receive. Over time, a pearl will develop a creamy patina. This is much sought after by collectors.

A cultured pearl is a type of pearl that is created when a mollusc is implanted with a small piece of material, such as a bead or a piece of shell. In time, the mollusc will coat the object with layers of nacre, producing a pearl. Natural pearls, on the other hand, are formed without any human intervention. They are typically formed when a natural irritant such as a parasite gets inside the mollusc and sets off the production of nacre.
